The Light...

Darkness pushed
and shoved its shoulders
against my house;

wind wrapped its
length around smoke,
brick, and black trees,

finally bellowing
and blustering below
the low hanging eaves,

rattling, railing
against the silent
faces of windows.

Beating violently
on my bolted doors,
the wild wind roars,

and I hide,
vainly seeking a flicker
of light...

I think of Nabokov's words,

'The cradle rocks above an abyss,
and common sense tells us
that our existence is but a brief
crack of light between two
eternities of darkness.'

But, I know he's wrong,
for God would never leave us
without comfort...

Are we not of his garden,
his beloved flowers clinging to
stems swaying in the
fiercest of nights,

with faces tilted
upward, awaiting his
sacred offering
of light?

No, Nabokov...

Faith is the inextinguishable
light of all eternities.

The Light is always there just beyond the darkness, beckoning to us, isn't it? Sometimes that knowledge is all we have to keep us moving forward and not giving up completely. That knowledge is comforting and inspiring in itself, and He whispers his reassurance to us as we wind our way through the dark times of our lives. If we will only pause to listen, one will hear.

Your poetry never fails to move me emotionally, and this outstanding free verse is no exception. A brilliant and strong ending which reflects determination to face the darkness and persevere.

Your faithful fan,
Brenda

Dear Mattie,

My first reaction was to cry with the brilliant beauty of your words. Then my jaw dropped, as I realized my heart contains those feeligs, which my mind had not even formed as thoughts. Oddly, I tilted my face upward, feeling a measure of Faith shared. I offer my gratitude for your sharing

Many blessings,
Dixie

Greetings Mattie~
I wandered over here from Robert Brault's blog. I read your poem which he quoted in the comments of his Dec. 6th post. The poem is so beautiful, it moved me to come visit here.
I must say, this is such a beautifully designed blog... such a lovely place to spend time. Your poems have captured me and I will be back to visit!

Brenda,

I'm sorry it took so long to respond to your comments. You do know I always reach out to you in thought, if not in words? I do...

It seems my light burns, wavers, and appears to extinguish itself at times...then in one quick movement flames again, offering me comfort...at least for a short while. Life has involved a 'balancing' of my physical and spiritual journey these past few months. I've not done well with either of these things.

Bless you for being there for me.
Much love to you always.(smile)

Dixie,

The amazing thing about faith is if we lose our grip on it for a while, rediscovering it makes it all the more glorious and precious. I've stumbled so many times these past few months. I can't count the times...

Keep tilting your face upward, my friend. The 'light' is there for each of us to find.(smile)

Thank you for your strength and support, Dixie.

Blessings to you,
Mattie

Maria,

It's nice to meet you! I'm sorry it took a while to respond, but health issues have kept me from the blogs.

Robert Brault is a very dear person. You couldn't choose a better blog to visit than his. Isn't he inspiring?

I thank you for visiting me. It was a pleasure reading your comments. And, yes, I absolutely love Michael Buble!(smile)

Blessings to you,
Mattie
